So, you missed the fall Medicare Open Enrollment window between October and December, and you’re worried about finding a policy. Or now that the holiday season has passed, maybe you’ve realized that the policy you have isn’t a good fit, and you’re worried that you’re stuck with it.
Sound familiar? Don’t worry – we’re here to tell you that there’s hope for you yet! starting January 1, you’ll have a few months to review, switch, or even leave your Medicare Advantage coverage (Medicare.gov). Let’s walk through how it works, and what it means for you.
What the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period Actually Lets You Do
From January 1 to March 31, if you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (sometimes called Medicare Part C), you can make one (1) change to your coverage.
This ONLY applies if you are enrolled in Medicare Advantage. If you’ve got an original Medicare (Part A) plan, and want to switch into an Advantage plan, or if you want to change your prescription drug coverage (Part D) plan, those changes usually have to be made during the fall enrollment window (October 15 to December 7).
What changes are you allowed to make? You can either…
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan, with or without prescription drug (Part D) coverage
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare (Part A), AND join a separate Part D plan if you want prescription drug coverage
Your new coverage then takes effect on the first day of the month after you request the change is made (Wellcare).
Why It Matters So Much
It’s easy to sign up for a plan and think everything is okay…until you realize that your doctor isn’t in-network, or your medications are really expensive, or you decide you want more benefits. Plans can – and do – change each year, and so can your health and lifestyle. What once worked just might be right for you anymore (Humana).
Why Should I Consider A Switch?
Life changes, and your coverage should keep up. Here are a few situations where folks typically reach out for a plan review:
- Your plan dropped a doctor or pharmacy you rely on
- Prescription costs skyrocketed
- Benefits didn’t work out the way you expected
- You want a plan with better coverage for vision, dental, or hearing
- Your prescription drugs aren’t covered as well as you expected
- Your out-of-pocket costs are higher than you thought they’d be
- You’re suddenly using care services you didn’t think you’d need
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. The good news is that the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period gives you a one-time do-over. No one should feel locked into a plan that doesn’t make sense.
